Actions related to Sustainable Development:

2017: Signs the Covenant of Mayors

2018: Completes the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP)

2019: Develops a Public Bike Share Scheme 

2019: The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) is launched

2021: Proceeds with the development of the Electric Vehicle Charging Plan

The city of Veroia is the most populous settlement of the Regional Unit of Imathia and the municipal seat of the homonymous Municipality. It has a reach and influence in the entire western part of the region of Central Macedonia, cooperating with other cities of the wider region. Its special features include the riverside zone of the Tripotamos River, classified as an area of exceptional natural beauty, as well as the registered historical sites of Barbouta, Panagia Dexia, Kyriotissa and Elli Kontogeorgaki.

Projects already completed and projects in the pipeline, to promote Sustainable Mobility:

  • “Bioclimatic cultural route network in the old town of Veria”, with a budget of ~3M€, is implemented in the framework of the Sustainable Urban Development Strategy (SUDS) combining microclimate improvement – energy saving – urban regeneration. It includes:
    -Redevelopment of degraded urban areas of 9,800 m2
    -Creation of a single 1430m long route linking key cultural, historical, and natural points of the city
    -Undergrounding of energy networks
  • Improving urban mobility and promoting road safety in 4 school complexes. The project is implemented in the framework of the Sustainable Urban Development Strategy (SUDS). It includes:
    -New vertical and horizontal signage and redevelopment of the sidewalks around the schools.
    -Construction of three (3) urban intersections.
    -New electromechanical equipment (street lighting, smart city, etc.).

The Common Vision of the Municipality for mobility was developed within the framework of the SUMP, as follows: Improvement of the city’s operation to enhance its role as a regional development hub by shifting to active and public means of transportation and enhancing the knowledge of residents, workers and visitors on them.

Based on the Common Vision, the Strategic Objectives of the SUMP were also set:

  • Exploiting the natural and cultural environment to increase the use of alternative forms of transport.
  • Reducing the use of private cars & discouraging transit through the centre of Veria.
  • Improving the level of service of the Public Transport system.
  • Substitution of commuting with remote access to services through Information and Communication Technologies.
