The Municipality of Nea Smyrni is located south of the Municipality of Athens and is adjacent to it. The tramway runs along the main road axis of the Municipality, connecting it on one side with the centre of Athens and on the other side with the southern suburbs and the port of Piraeus.

Caring for the quality of life and public health of its citizens, the municipality carries out interventions and projects to reduce traffic congestion, clean air and save energy.

Some of its integrated actions for Sustainable Mobility are:

  • development of a pedestrian network that connects the central entrance of the city with the central square of Nea Smyrni, Karyllou Square, all the way to the Nea Smyrni Grove
  • regeneration of pavements and road surfaces with cold materials and development of a mechanism for continuous monitoring and repair of damages and dangerous spots
  • construction of a network of cycling paths over a large area of the Municipality
  • construction of an underground public parking area near the grove and the central square
  • free public transport service
  • installation of “smart shelters” with a mobile charging bench at the public transport stops and “smart seating” with electricity supply from a photovoltaic panel, mobile charging and seating for disabled people in the grove
  • use of Led lamps in the municipal street lighting
  • the purchase of 7 electric vehicles is planned for the Municipality’s fleet (2 buses, 1 garbage truck, 2 scooters, 1 van, 1 car and 1 dump truck).
