The Municipality of Larissa was the first in Greece to develop and implement a SUMP!

The sustainable mobility measures planned or implemented so far with a budget of €40M indicatively are:

  1. Creating a network of soft mobility routes (woonerf, cycle paths, pedestrian walkways, clean pavements, etc.) in the centre, but also in residential areas.
  2. A smart pedestrian access control system (UVAR)
  3. Strengthening public transport, with a radical revamp in the circulation and operation of urban buses
  4. Development of peripheral parking areas and a controlled parking system

The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan has been the subject of extensive consultation with stakeholders and residents of the city, which continues during the implementation of each measure.

Completed projects:

  • 2 collector roads 10 km long
  • 6 soft streets with a cycle path
  • 6 light traffic roads with a cycle path
  • 3 light traffic roads with roundabouts and a cycle path
  • Network of light traffic roads in the district of Ag. Konstantinos
  • A smart access control system for the pedestrian streets of the centre and the Fortress hill
  • Marking of disabled parking spaces in the city centre and in cultural areas

Future Actions:

  • A smart controlled parking system for parking in the centre and in 5 peripheral locations
  • Redevelopment of the existing ring road
  • 3 additional light traffic roads and cycle paths
  • 4 cycle paths from the centre towards the city entrances
  • Redevelopment of Agios Athanasios district
  • Preparation of a SUMP for the city suburbs

The projects included in the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) are the new leap we need to take, they are the image of tomorrow that we have an obligation to create.
